Getting into this thing called Yoga

So I mentioned in a previous post how I took my first Yoga class 2 weeks ago.  It was great.   It was a hot power vinyasa yoga and was just perfect on the cold rainy night.   I found so insanely challenging without it being cardo so it peaked my interest with the lack of cardio lately.   I finally was able to get back into the studio last night for a less intense class and loved it even more.   The instructor was so supportive of Alicia and I (being newbies) and telling us how great we were doing.   I got home and immediately bought one of these:

It's a yoga mat and towel built into one.   It was pricey at $60.00 but I figured that I can spend $30.00 on a less amazing mat now only to end up purchasing a better one later anyway or just go ahead and get the good one.   It was also 5 stars on Amazon with tons of reviews so that partially sold me as well.

I also saw a great Cyber Monday deal on my favorite shoes, Saucony guide.   They were the old version (the ones I'm currently in) for only $50.00.   I contemplated if I really need the new version they just came out with at the price of $100.00 but decided that I love my current shoe enough to keep running in the "old" version.  If you run in Saucony Guide, Running Warehouse has them still on liquidation prices for $61.00 here

Would you buy the old version of a shoe to save $50.00?

Would you spend $60.00 on a yoga mat?

I figure I saved $50.00 on my shoes so that makes my mat like the price of $10.00 if you want to twist it around that way like I do when I justify spending money that should be going toward Christmas gifts.

Three Things Thursday

1.  Last week I ran a turkey trot but decided not to write a race review/recap of it because everyone and their mother ran a turkey trot last week and nothing special happened for me.   I ran 5 miles, felt a bit fatigued with my lack of running lately, and felt the closest to vomiting after a race that I ever have.   I actually gagged.  I wasn't even pushing myself very hard.   What gives??

2.  I have a 5k this weekend....well,it was supposed to be a 5k but then they decided to change it to 3.2 miles because it's some anniversary for them.   I don't even know what to do with that.   Usually by the end of 3.1 miles, I feel like I'm on the edge of dying so there is a great chance I might just die in between that 3.1 and 3.2 mark.   I also haven't done a 5k in a whole year.   I don't think at this point I have improved at all.    That's pretty depressing!

3.  I haven't been running but I have been working on strength.  I lack strength so incredibly that I have to  focus on that for a while.   I realize that without strength, my running is going to suffer and right now with Mike taking 7 credits at school, the girls activities, me working two jobs, and sleeping I just don't have time to go for a 2 hour run.   I have been getting up at 5:30am just so I have a chance to do a 20 minute Jillian Michaels DVD.

Speaking of strength.   I worked out with Kim and Alicia this week at Kim's house.   She put together a strength circuit for us to do and she said that we would be hurting the next day.   She wasn't lying.   I was in so much pain 24 hours later that I had to text her about how she did a good job.   The best part about doing strength with Kim?  We do it in her basement and once we are done, we move 3 feet to the left and there is a fully stocked fridge of micro brews.   I was in heaven with the amazing beer selection.

4.   Yep, there is a 4th so I basically lied when I said three things Thursday.   I realize I still haven't shown you a picture of my kitchen after the work we have done.   This is because life is so busy for us that Mike hasn't been able to put the finishing touches on it...aka the trim.  I don't want to show it until that is done because it just looks weird without it but here is a sneak peak.

He is closing in on the end of his semester and in classic Mike style, he always has 6 weeks of work to do in last 2-3 weeks.   I see lots of lonely nights in my future.

Skinny Pad Thai

Looking for something to fill you up but not make you feel guilty about it?   Here you go.

Don't mind the lack of photography skills.   I was hungry.

Skinny Pad Thai
(Adapted from Can you Stay for Dinner)

1 medium head of cabbage
1 Tbs. Sesame Oil
2 Cups Mushrooms
2 Cloves of Garlic
3 Tbs. Soy Sauce
2 Large Eggs
1 tsp. Brown Sugar
1 tsp. Crushed Red Pepper (optional)

Chopped Peanuts (For Garnish)
Green Onion (For Garnish)

Chop up the cabbage.   In a wok, add your Sesame Oil.   Once warm, add the chopped cabbage and cook for 7-9 minutes, until starting to cook down but still crisp.

Add the mushrooms and cook until they start to soften.

In a bowl, combine the brown sugar, soy sauce, crushed red pepper and garlic.   Whisk to combine.   Once the mushrooms are softened, pour into wok and stir to coat.

With the cabbage and mushrooms still in the wok, make a well in the center of the wok.  Crack the eggs open and put into the center of the wok.   Scramble the eggs in the pan and let cook a little before combining the eggs with the cabbage on the outside of the pan.   Once the eggs are fully cooked, serve with a garnish of peanuts and green onions.

I am still married

So we have nearly finished the first phase of our kitchen remodel and I've managed to stay married.   This is a true test on both of us.   We are barely speaking right now but we'll get over it.   As of right now, we have put in new counter tops, new sink, and new facet.    Today I ran to home depot with my girls and was really scared to commit to a back splash tile without Mike there.  I really had my eye on one in particular but we have such different taste in style that I knew he'd probably hate it so I grabbed another one I liked, not loved, but would be willing to do if Mike picked it.   I'm a great wife like that.

I brought them both home and put them up on the wall.   He smirked because he was certain he would pick the one I liked less.   Then he pointed.   It was the one I loved.   I thought he was joking but it's true, we actually like the same thing.   I will finish that up this weekend and then take some pictures for you all the see.  In the spring we plan on taking all the doors and hardware off of the cabinets and painting the doors and cabinets white and putting new brushed bronze hardware on.   We are waiting until spring because we do not have anywhere in this house that we could possibly lay out the doors to paint for days at a time and I'm not going to freeze in the garage for hours on end.

In the meantime, this is what my house looked like last night.   I wanted to cry and have a fit.   I hate when my house gets like this.

The ugly green color was actually the color behind the previous back splash.    That's also the bottom of the counter top and not the actual color.

In other news, Mike was gone all weekend so I had to put up with the kitchen being half done for 3 days while he was gone deer hunting.   He got a buck (gross) and I managed to have the laziest Saturday I've ever had.   I was so smart that I convinced the girls to come up to my room to play Yahtzee while I watched TV and laid down.

Don't be fooled.   There were two of them.

She's an odd one and I love her for that.

My friend also managed to birth a toddler.   Without an epidural.

Meet baby Leah.   All 10 pounds 10 ounces of her.

How's that for a random post?

Friday oh Friday

Here is what is on my mind today.

Yesterday I went to take "before" pictures of my kitchen since we are putting in new counter tops, back splash and eventually will paint our cabinets.  I have two lenses.  One is a fixed 50mm lens and the other is a zoom lens.   I like the 50mm and of course the zoom lens is always on there when I go to use the camera so I said to Mike "You always put the stupid zoom lens on here!"  His reply?  "There was a squirrel!"  I swear I don't make this stuff up.   This is the life I live.

Speaking of new counter tops.   It took him 12 hours to install a piece that is like 3 feet wide, leaving me with the big counter top in 90's hunter green until he can get back to it in 3 days.   I also think he turned the water off to the dishwasher and I wont be able to ask him about that until about 8pm tonight....and it's full.....and I have some of Katelyn's friends sleeping over tonight.   Plastic forks it'll be.

It's Friday and that means I can wear a Packer Sweatshirt and jeans to work.  Any chance I get to wear pants other than dress pants I will take.

I have been waking up at 5:30 for no reason lately.   I get up 1 full hour before I need to just so I can enjoy a cup of coffee,  watch the news and use the computer before the chaos of getting everyone else up and ready starts.   I think it is starting to take it's toll on me.   I was in bed by 8:30 last night.

You can see my ugly 90's counter tops in the background that Mike did not get to yet.

When I walked in the door from work yesterday he asked me a question about how he should install the counter tops in.   I had no idea so I pretty much ignored the question and started eating lunch.   Then about 15 minutes later he said to me "It's pretty crappy that I wait for you to get home to answer a question and all you care to do is eat."

Excuse me?

I am pretty sure it's against the rules somewhere to instantly expect your spouse to be productive the first 30 minutes after they get home from work.   Also, who did he think he married?  I've always had a love for food and food comes first in all situations.   Chances are, if I had answered that question it would have been wrong because of low blood sugar.

Obviously home improvements are great on a marriage.  I keep forgetting how much it sucks to do anything to our home with Mike.   Last year we redid our bedroom and I'm pretty sure we hated each other by the end.  This time isn't looking any better.

Random weekend stuff.

Now that my kids are getting older, and I am working a job during the week, I often feel like my weekends are less relaxing and more busy.   This weekend was no exception.   It's constantly go go go and now here I am writing a blog post at 6am on Monday morning ready to start it all over again.

A couple of fun things happened this weekend.   The first thing was when I was driving home from my second job on Saturday night (Sunday Morning).   I don't get out of work until about 1am so as I'm driving home I happened to see a cop.   I passed him going 4 over and thought that was the perfect speed to let him know I wasn't drinking (they always go 4 under!) and it wasn't too much for me to get pulled over.   I was wrong.  He turned on his lights and I pulled over.

Why is all of this fun?  Well, it really isn't.   Not at all.   BUT I seriously get pulled over for the most ridiculous and annoying reasons ever all the time and it has sort of turned into a joke.   I no longer am nervous when I get pulled over either.   It's sort of like "What now?!"  It usually happens while I'm in Mike's car too so when he has a malfunctioning tail light, I'm the one that ends up getting pulled over for it.   Plus I get pulled over for every possible thing in my grocery getter too.

I didn't end up with a ticket.   I didn't even get a written warning.   They had an OWI Task force out that night and I think he was surprised I wasn't drinking (we live in Wisconsin and everyone is an alcoholic) and sent me on my way with "The prize for the cleanest record of the night."  aka I have no record.  Just tryin' to make an honest living here sir.

On Sunday I had a baby shower to go to.   It was nice seeing everyone again and one of my friends is 39 weeks pregnant (not the one having the shower) and I am so excited for her to have that baby so I can hold that baby....and then hand her back and go home to get a full nights sleep.    Mike and I had babies very young.   Way before any of our friends had babies.   It was very hard and no one understood how hard it was and I wouldn't expect them to either.   Now that our girls are older, it's such a rewarding feeling to be past that hard baby stage.   I like going into a store and knowing my little ducklings are following behind me regardless of if I'm looking at them every 2 seconds.   However, I don't enjoy the back talking they have learned.   Babies don't back talk.

After the baby shower I was ready for something new.    Hot Yoga!   I was so excited for this.    It was a rainy, crappy day so hot yoga sounded amazing.

I have never done yoga before so I went in not knowing what the expect.    It started off all great.   Then my weak upper body started to show it's face and every time I heard Chaturanga or Downward Dog I thought I might cry.   My arms were shaking, I was dripping sweat all over and my hair wasn't put up well so it kept sticking to my sweaty face.    My favorite pose was this:

You get to lay there and do nothing.   It was glorious.   This class was pretty intense the first half hour.   After that we moved into more poses so it split things up a bit and then the last half hour was more along the lines of meditation.   It was a 90 minute class and by the end my arms were so shaky.   I would say that it did a good job of beating me up.   In all seriousness I did enjoy it though.   I just learned a few things and will know how to handle it better next time to make it more enjoyable.   Yes, there will be a next time.

Have you done Yoga?   Do you enjoy it?

Am I the only one that gets pulled over all the time for things other than speeding?

Finally, got the race pictures right....

I've been told I have a look that I always end up giving during race photos.   It's been called the death stare.   The look that I want to cut someone.   That I want to punch someone.   Honestly, these are all true feelings when I'm racing.   Running does not come effortlessly for me.

BUT this run was a little different.  My legs were indeed dead but I was having fun and I had Falon with me to remind me not to give that look during photo ops.   I'm so lucky I got to run with her!

Tyranena Beer Run Weekend

Ahh the weekend I have been waiting for has finally come and gone.   It was full of fun, food and new friends.

The Race:

Since my full marathon, I've done very little running.   Call me bitter but I just sort of lost the mojo and have been struggling to get it back since then.   I think this half marathon was just what I needed.   I could really see how much my endurance had decreased just in that amount of time.   I arrived at the race calm as could be.  I kept having to remind myself that I was about to run a half marathon.   The reason I was so calm was because I knew I wasn't running this for time.  My only goal was to have fun, get it done and then eat food and drink beer.   Thankfully Falon felt the same way as me so we ran together and enjoyed the run.

The course is hilly.   Very hilly.    It was nice being with a seasoned Tyranena runner because Falon knew exactly when we would be hitting a hill or when we would be turning.   We made the goal to run until we hit any mountains and then run the down hill and stuck to that for the the first half of the marathon.   One of my favorite parts of this race was the  "Unofficial Beer Stop" that some man had set up at the end of his driveway.   He had all different kinds of Tyranena beer out for us to drink.  I could see myself being friends with him.

I think I was giving the thumbs up and cutting Falon off all at the same time.

Before we knew it, the race was done.   I finished in 2:38.  My slowest half marathon this year but my favorite.   I of course had to be dramatic at one point when my knee went shitty on me.   I couldn't even pinpoint the spot of pain because the entire thing just hurt.   Then like that it was gone and we were back to running.  My running career flashed before my eyes for a couple of minutes though.

Afterwards they feed you amazing food and amazing beer.

I forgot to take a picture until my salad was gone and half my lasagna was eaten.

A small story about this picture.   I do not know these people.  The two in the middle came up to me and asked me if I could take their picture.  I smiled and said sure.   They posed.   I waited.   I finally realized they wanted me to take a picture of them with my camera.   I told two other people passing by to get into the picture as well and warned them that they can search for this because it will be on some random blog.   Cheers!

After the race we went back to Rachel's house to eat more food, drink more alcohol and get all pretty.   We all walked to a local bar where fun was sure to be had but of course shit happens to me constantly and I had an allergic reaction to something I ate so I sat in the grass outside of this bar scratching my entire body until I was bleeding.    Finally I called it quits and went back to the house because I wasn't getting better and I was dizzy, and having terrible stomach cramping.   After over an hour of that crap, the Benedryl finally kicked in and I was out.   A shout out to Alicia for sitting with me as I rubbed my entire body on the ground and was nearly crying and passing out in Piggly Wiggly.   I don't know what I would have done without you.

The only good part about being the one that doesn't go out is the morning after when they all get up, you feel great and they all are double fisting beverages to rehydrate.

I look forward to another reuniting with all of these great ladies.  I had a great time meeting them and running with them (Falon).   I do feel like I missed out on a lot of the fun since I wasn't able to go to the bar with them.   We all know the best bonding is over a beer.   Maybe next year!

I don't have much to post about...but I do have pictures!

This week I have managed to get up 30 minutes before I need to in order to get Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred in.  I'm sore.  My gluts are really feeling it which is great because they are so lazy as it is and need to get some muscle.  I was supposed to get up today and do it and I had every intention to but I can't find the remote to my Google TV so I can't play the disc.   I did some HIIT instead.

T-2 days until Tyranena Half Marathon.   I have no goals other than to have fun.

I took fall photos for my sister this week.   Here are a few of my favorites.   I love this girl so very much.

My Sister and Aubri

So it is known in my house that Mike does not read this blog.   He doesn't find me that interesting (shocker) and would probably think less of me if he did read what I blog about (beer, snot rockets, puking).

Yesterday he runs up to me with the camera declaring that I must upload some pictures he took immediately.   I thought he was joking at first and had read my blog for the first time in forever so I kind of smiled and was like "Oh sure."   Then he continues this conversation to say "Look at this picture (while showing me the small screen on the camera)...and it's not all blurry like my pictures normally are!"

He was totally serious and still hasn't read my blog.   I had to play it off and be all serious and supportive of his photo taking improvement.

Here are the pictures:

Are you noticing a trend here?

He was soooo proud of this picture.

Maybe I should start a page of Mike's photos since he actually uses the camera more than I do.   He would probably be a better blogger than I am.
